Neal leads in Wayne County Youth Fishing Derby Youngsters fishing the Wayne County 5GrandSlam and Merchants Challenge Youth Derby have been reeling in the fish. Josh Neal has qualified for the Merchants Challenge and stands at the top in first place. Neal, of Williamson, entered the ages 8-15 division of the derby. He reached first place by catching all five species of fish in the Merchants Challenge. (perch, walleye, pike, large and smallmouth bass.) Catching a few fish in that division is tough enough. He has caught all five, completing the challenge. Here's how the derby works. The Merchants Challenge Division requires the young anglers to catch the five species of warm water fish; pike, perch, walleye, largemouth, and smallmouth bass. After qualifying they can add to their total weight by weighing-in larger species. The GrandSlam Division species are; Chinook, Coho, steelhead, brown, and lake trout. The Species Challenge allows anglers to enter any one of the ten species. No qualifying is necessary in the Species Division. Louise Davenport, from the WC Derby Committee said she has been weighing in some nice catches for the 2008 event. 'We have 72 youngsters fishing this year,' Davenport said. 'Not only do the winners receive some excellent prizes, and US Savings Bonds; if they come to the awards ceremony, and have registered for the contest, they will receive a free GrandSlam T-shirt.' The contest runs through August 17 and the awards ceremony is August 23 from 11 to 1. The Sodus Point Fire Hall will again host the Wayne County 5GrandSlam and Merchants Challenge Youth Derby. The updated leader board can be viewed at click on GrandSlam and see how the young anglers are doing. For more info contact the Tourism Office at 800.527.6510. Copyright
