Baseball lecture at Lyons Library The Lyons Public Library is presenting a lecture/discussion series led by Victor Harris. The series begins Tuesday, August 12, and continues August 26, September 9, Sept. 23, and October 7. Sessions begin at noon and are held in the library's community room. Entitled Baseball: The heart and mind of America: from Doubleday to Fenway - the program will examine baseball in its cultural setting. Tracing the game from its formative years in the 19th century to modern mega-business trappings, the focus will be on myths, trends, and icons that shaped the rich tradition of baseball. Topics will include coverage of The Negro Leagues, Latinos in baseball, and a commentary on the modern game. Attendees will also visit the post-World War Two decade for a nostalgic look at baseball's 'Golden Age' through the lens of the baseball fiction masterpiece - 'The Southpaw' by Mark Harris. Each topic will have a complementary reading selection to enhance the lecture presentation, but these are not mandatory for attendance or participation. The format will consist of introductory lectures for each session and some entertaining film vignettes, followed by the open floor question and answer segment. Here are the reading selections: If I never get back by Darryl Brock; Don't look back: Satchel Paige in the shadows of baseball by Mark Ribowsky; Clemente: the passion and grace of baseball's last hero by David Maraniss; The Southpaw by Mark Harris and The Ashes of Lou Gehrig by Sean Kirst. The program is free and registration is not required. Series is made possible by a grant from the Robert G. Boehmler Foundation. If you need more information, call 946.9262.
