Freshman orientation is Aug. 27 Link Crew staff at Newark High School are preparing for freshman orientation. All first-time freshmen should arrive at the high school promptly at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27. From 1-5 p.m. in the high school gymnasium, freshmen will experience expectations and challenges facing them as they transition from middle to high school. Link Crew Leaders, consisting of juniors and seniors, will lead the 9th graders through activities designed to help them make good choices in high school. Link Crew Leaders attend 10 hours of training in August to prepare them for the responsibilities of leading a Link Crew throughout the year. Link Crews consist of 8-10 freshmen and two leaders who spend the year together working through challenges and sharing successes. Ninth graders will work with members of their link crew and meet their leaders. Additionally, 9th graders will receive their class schedule for the start of school and spend time locating classes and tackling that ever-stubborn locker. Judy Shipp, Program Supervisor, Math 9-12, math teacher and one of four Link Crew coordinators at the high school is looking forward to another year of link crew. 'It is amazing to see how our leaders take on the responsibility of helping 9th graders succeed in their first year. It is the basis of the success of the program.' Sharon Sweet, another Link Crew Coordinator, says one of the first activities that link leaders and their crews will complete when school starts, is helping 9th graders think long term their graduation and plans after high school. 'Every freshman will start a college/career poster which will change and develop throughout high school. It will, however, help ninth graders begin to understand the importance of their high school education.'
