Holloway wins Arcadian Foundation Scholarship
By John Zornow - GateHouse News Service

The Arcadian Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation established by Newark High School alums, has awarded a four-year college scholarship to Amanda Holloway. She is a member of the class of 2009, the daughter of Alyson Holloway.

The scholarship is in the amount of up to $32,000, payable over four years and will be applied to tuition, fees, room and board. The Foundation selected Holloway due to her excellent academic credentials and participation in extracurricular activities.

'We are very proud to have selected Amanda,' said Gordon Devens, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Executive Director of the Foundation, and a 1986 Newark High School graduate.

'She typifies all of the qualities we are looking for in recipients of the scholarship, and struck us as a great kid with a very bright future.' Devens wished her the best as she wraps up her time at NHS and in the next steps of her education and thanked the staff for a phenomenal job of screening candidates and putting profiles together. 'Without their work and passions, we wouldn't have a chance of picking the right kids,' he said.

Since 1996, the Arcadian Foundation's mission has been to award a $32,000 college scholarship on a biennial basis to one member of the Newark Junior class at the end of his/her junior year, allowing the recipient to choose a college with the knowledge that the scholarship funds will be available. Holloway is the seventh recipient of the scholarship.

'Our objective is to select recipients on the basis of outstanding academic merit, citizenship and financial need, and to substantially pay for their college education, stated Devens. 'We look forward to continuing this scholarship program and expanding its scope in the future.'

Gordon and Alex Devens talked about the Arcadian Foundation, expressing their desire to expand the scope of the charity. They hope that as residents become more familiar with the Foundation, and recognize that it presents a convenient opportunity to give back to the community in an easy and tax deductible way, they will see more involvement.

'The positive impacts that we have seen with all recipients have emphasized to us how worthwhile this program is and what an impact it can have on a student's life. We welcome the opportunity to discuss the program with anyone who is interested,' said Alex Devens.
