School District names Mayor 'Friend of Education'

Newark Mayor Peter Blandino was the 2008 recipient of the Newark Central School District 'Friend of Education' award today.

Presented each year at the opening assembly at the Superintendent's conference day prior to the opening of the new year school, it is given to someone who goes the extra mile to support Newark education.

Superintendent Henry Hann enumerated how Blandino, as mayor, has done just that, by partnering with the school district in so many ways including letting it use village facilities when needed.

He said Blandino and village board members came up the great idea of recognizing students who do their best in school everyday at the annual 'Night of Champions' and attendance at the event has steadily grown.

Hann said Blandino, and his wife, Helen, faithfully attend many school district events. He also noted how the mayor has helped coordinate welcoming 'parades' with Newark police and local firefighters for sports teams when they have won sectionals or state championships.
