Another GrandSlam Derby for area kids
The Wayne County 5-GrandSlam and Merchants Challenge Youth Derby Committee honored the young anglers who competed this spring and summer. The awards ceremony for the 11th annual derby was held at the Sodus Point Fire Hall, on August 23. The derby signed up 75 youth registrants, the second best showing for the fishing contest. Forty-eight youngsters caught fish during the competition which started May 3 and ended August 17. There are two age groups, and the winners receive saving bonds, fishing packets, and gift certificates. Within the two age groups there are three separate divisions in the fishing derby. The GrandSlam Division is the cold-water fish contest. Catch all five species of trout and salmon in Lake Ontario (Coho, Chinook, brown and lake trout, and steelhead.) and you qualify for Grand prize. Once you catch all five, you can add to your score with a heavier catch. The Challenge Division has the same criteria, although the five fish to qualify are warm-water species; pike, perch, walleye, small and large-mouth bass. Species is the third division. The largest fish in any division is a winner. Winning the GrandSlam Division, with a total weight of 61.16 pounds for all five fish was Zachary Cappon, from Williamson. Two youngsters won the Merchants Challenge. Josh and Jake Neal (cousins) from Williamson-Sodus caught all five warm water species to capture the challenge. Josh had a total weight of 23.15 pounds and Jake came in second with 16.09 pounds. The Derby is promoted by the County Office of Tourism, Wayne County Derby Committee, and the County Federation of Sportsman's Clubs.
