Wayne County's oldest Veteran honored on 100th birthday

Bernie VandenBussche of Newark was honored on July 27, at a birthday celebration at the County Nursing Home, attended by over 70 family and friends.

Shown are Chris Spencer, Patti DeMay, VandenBussche, his daughter Betty Spencer, and Assemblyman Bob Oaks.

Oaks presented VandenBussche with a U.S. flag secured by Congressman Jim Walsh. Other recognition included a birthday card from President Bush, a letter from Gov. Paterson and numerous other cards and notes.

VandenBussche lived independently until earlier this summer, when he moved into the Wayne County Nursing Home.
