School Specialty closing its doors
By Stephanie Knarr

The School Specialty distribution center in Lyons will be closing its doors for business come mid-October. Yesterday, employees of the nationally known school supply center received the sad news that their jobs will no longer be available. Melissa Hagan, Receiving Lead, has been with the company for ten years. When asked "What will you do now?" she sighs but states "the opportunities are endless. When one door closes, another one will open." She did confirm that the overall mood today is that of a depressed tone, as 37 full-time employees will be looking for new work.

A small severance package has been offered to the full-time employees, as well as a possible transfer to other distribution centers. The closest center to Lyons is located in Pennsylvania.

The remaining stock left here is being divided up among its other remaining facilities. Currently, the Lyons location is the only facility affected by this recent decision implemented to control costs. Its headquarter office will remain in Appleton, Wisconsin.

School Specialty is an education company that provides educational supplies and services to educators and institutions across the country. It was also a principal competitor to the former J.L. Hammett Company who sold its interest to School Specialty in 2000 for $82 million.

J.L. Hammett Company was the oldest and largest independently owned school-supply retailer and distributor in the United States. Its presence in Lyons was held at a large warehouse on Water Street. It then built a new facility on Route 14 just outside the downtown area.
