NEWARK - Newark Police are investigating two break-ins that occurred on East Union Street in the early morning hours Tuesday.

Officers Aaron Dean and Ken Davis were dispatched to the Newark Diner at 226 E. Union St. shortly after 6 a.m. when owner Jim McBride discovered that rear window of his establishment had been broken. The interior of the diner, police said, was ransacked and jars of coins were missing. A security camera was also ripped from the wall. No footage was available from the camera, police said.

At 8 a.m., Matt Meyer, the owner of the Tire Rack, at 220 E. Union St. called police after he discovered that intruders had gained entry through a rear door. Nothing was reported missing from his business.

The investigation continues, Police Chief David Christler said.

"Currently we have Newark police officers on the scene collecting evidence and working on leads," he added.

A furniture store located between the two businesses was not tampered with and no other incidents had been reported as of 10 a.m. that morning, Christler said.
