Among the items recovered from a string of alleged burglaries in Newark were liquor, coins, jewelry, digital cameras and an X-box. Mailman’s tip leads to arrests

David HendersonNEWARK  - A tip from a letter carrier led to the apprehension of four Newark teenagers Tuesday in connection to a string of home burglaries on West Avenue, West Maple Avenue and Edgett Street, Newark Police said.

Charged were David C. Henderson, 16, of 110 East Sherman Ave., and Kenneth C. Niles, 17, of 3046 Route 88 N., with four counts of felony second-degree burglary, four counts of petit larceny, felony third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal tampering. Two 15-year-olds, whose names were not released because of their ages, were charged as juvenile offenders.

After receiving a call from a resident whose home had been allegedly broken into, Officer Dan Weegar responded to the scene. While collecting information from the victim, a letter carrier arrived to deliver the homeowner’s mail. Weegar asked the postal worker if he’d seen or heard anything suspicious. The letter carrier told the officer he’d heard kids up in the woods in vicinity of the alleged burglaries. Weegar allegedly found the four teens in the wooded area with items - including coins and jewelry - reported stolen, police said.

Kenneth NilesHenderson and Niles, who according to Interim Police Chief David Christler, have been the subjects of prior investigations for similar incidents, were arraigned in Newark Village Court and sent to the Wayne County Jail on $10,000 cash or $20,000 bail bond.
