ViaHealth of Wayne
wins matching grant

The ViaHealth of Wayne Foundation has been awarded a matching grant of $200,000 from the Bullis Fund, of the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

The grant will be used for the expansion of the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital Emergency Department. A portion of the grant, $100,000, must be matched in full by December 31.

Community members are invited to make a tax-deductible donation or a pledge in support of the Emergency Department expansion project.

The Hospital Emergency Department was originally constructed during the Hospital's expansion in 1972. The Emergency Department has seen a significant increase in patients and is providing care for close to 20,000 patients annually an increase of more than 40 percent in the last eight years. For many families, the Emergency Department is their primary source of health care, as well as providing care during major health crises.

Richard Kirchhoff, a member of the advisory group, said, 'The fund was created to support services that have a positive, lasting impact on the lives of people in this county. Expansion of the Emergency Department will help thousands of people for many years to come.'

The Bullis Fund was created from the estate of Jeanette Nettie Bullis, a businesswoman whose family settled in Macedon in the late 1830s. The Bullis Fund became a component fund of the Community Foundation in 2000. Grants from income generated by the endowment fund are reviewed by a committee of Wayne County representatives to reflect Miss Bullis interest in improving the quality of life of Wayne County residents.

'Our Emergency Department is vital to the health of people in this community and we are committed to providing quality care in the Emergency Department and throughout ViaHealth of Wayne,' said Robert Havrilla, chair of ViaHealth - Wayne Board. 'We have begun the process of submitting the paperwork required to go forward with this project.'

'Our Board is so thankful for this very significant donation by the Bullis Fund,' said the Rev. Tim Johnson, chair of the ViaHealth of Wayne Foundation Board. 'With the necessary support from the community, we can now start working towards fundraising for Newark-Wayne's Emergency Department project a project that is vital to providing better service for patients needing emergency care.'

The Foundation's mission is to support the healthcare needs of the citizens of Wayne County and the surrounding area through financial support and advocacy for Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and DeMay Living Center.

During the past 50 years, Newark Community Hospital's mission has been to provide high quality health care with compassion.

Newark-Wayne Community Hospital is the only hospital in Wayne County. Since its opening in 1994, DeMay Living Center, a spacious, modern 180-bed skilled nursing facility is located on the Newark-Wayne campus.
