Essay contest deadline is Feb. 26

Tent 56 - Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, are sponsoring the Bettye Myers Essay Contest.

The DUVCW is one of the oldest, direct lineage organizations in existence in the Country. The NY State Chapter was founded in 1893.

This organization was founded to honor their Fathers, Grandfathers, and all lineal descent ancestors who fought in the Civil War. Today, this Organization honors all veterans in many ways such as hosting Memorial Day Ceremonies, collecting preserving and maintaining historical information on Civil War Veterans, protection of Battlefields, Monuments and Cemeteries, providing goods and services to VA Hospitals, and shipping needed goods to our soldiers on active duty.

This contest was created to honor a woman, Bettye Myers, who was dedicated to patriotism, preserving and understanding history and how it shaped this country. Willingness to share and guide young people is her legacy.

The award-winning essay will receive a check for $100 to be awarded at the annual Blue Gray Debutante Ball on March 29, at the Marion American Legion.

This Ball is cosponsored by the DUVCW and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Abraham Lincoln Camp #6. The SUV is active in initiating legislation to protect Civil War Monuments, grave registration, and many of the same patriotic endeavors as the DUVCW.

The Contest is open to Wayne County students in grade 7 & 8 who have an interest in history. All entries must be received by Feb. 26.

Essay criteria can be obtained by contacting your school or calling S. Boris 483.4728 or N. Karasinski 483.5108. More information on these groups can be found at
