Rothpearl wins middle school Spelling Bee

The Newark Middle School Spelling Bee was held February 12, at 6:30 P.M. in the schools auditorium with Danielle Ohlson serving as the moderator.

Seventh-grade girls took top honors this year. Hannah Rothpearl earned first place after spelling 'thesaurus' correctly in the championship round. Kendra Bush came in second place, while Ashley Farley secured the runner-up position.

The top two spellers will represent Newark at the Regional Spelling Bee to on March 15, at William Smith College in Geneva. They will vie with other top spellers for a chance to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington.

ELA teachers, Susan VanTyle, Elaine Erb, and Lisa Zalacca were the judges. Family and friends gathered despite the worsening weather to support the seventeen sixth, seventh, and eighth graders as they competed for the top two spots.

Students earlier qualified for the event by placing in the top ten of a written test administered by ELA teachers at each grade level. The winning round had to be repeated a number of times, when students missed their championship word.

The top three spellers received medals for their accomplishments as well as the participation pins presented to all the students.
