Tutor training for Literacy Vols.

Looking to make 2008 a meaningful year? Literacy Volunteers invites you to join the 50 or so volunteer tutors busy helping people throughout Wayne County.

A tutor training class begins January 5, and continues January 12 and 19. Sessions last from 9 to 3, with a lunch break and will be held at the Family Education Center, 28 Canal Street in Lyons.

Tutoring offers interested people an opportunity to work with motivated individuals who are seeking to improve their lives. Tutors have a chance to work one-on-one or in small groups assisting adults with basic literacy, GED, English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), or mathematics. Potential tutors must be 18 years of age, have a high school or GED diploma, and be willing to attend the complete 18 hours of training.

Once certified, a tutor should be willing to spend at least two hours per week working with an adult and keep some basic records. No knowledge of a foreign language is required for ESL tutoring and you do not need any teaching background.

A $15 donation is asked to help defray the cost of the Tutor Manual. For more information, call Literacy Volunteers at 946.5333.
