Museum wins grant
for basement revitalizati
on

The Wayne County Museum has received a grant from the Augustus & Jennie Hoffman Foundation. The $4250 will be used for renovating the basement exhibition space. Over the last two years, 65 percent of the museum has been renovated.

There has been a gloomy atmosphere downstairs, location of the Early Kitchen and Weaving Exhibits.

Museum Director Larry Ann Evans says the downstairs is the last floor people usually visit, and they leave less enthusiastic than when they were visiting the rest of the museum and attached historic jail. 'Something had to be done,' said Evans.

In 2007 the Museum received a grant from the Stuart Foundation for $750.

'We plan to use that to completely relight the basement exhibition area,' said Evans. The false ceiling will be taken down to give the new lighting room and restore the original look to two exhibition rooms.

The Hoffman Foundation grant will be used to repair and paint the walls and refinish and repaint the concrete floors. Work on the basement will commence in the summer, when artifacts can be moved to the barn exhibition area.

The Museum of Wayne County History is located at 21 Butternut Street, Lyons; 946.4943 or check out www.waynehistory.org
