Marion girl raises money for United Way

Seven years ago, then first grader Anna Mitchell of Marion organized a simple auction, with proceeds benefiting those in need in the Wayne County area. Since then, her 'Helping Hands Auction' has become a December tradition involving many families.

December's auction featured painted wine glasses, jewelry, wreaths, candles and more - made by children from Marion, Newark, and Pittsford. Anna and her friends began work months ago to complete the projects. Some local businesses donated items. All of the proceeds went to support United Way of Wayne County.

'Just like the United Way, when people come together, they can accomplish great things,' Mitchell said. 'Young or old, we can do it.'

United Way of Greater Rochester President Peter Carpino met with Mitchell and her friends, and she gave him a check for $960, to be distributed to programs and services in Wayne County.

United Way of Wayne County will kick off its Spring 2008 campaign on March 19.
