Youth Impact 5K run is July 26 in Sodus

Jim and Karen Buyck organized a 5K for several years in Sodus to honor the memory of their son Jason.

The 5K generated monies for a scholarship in his honor that is awarded annually to a Sodus graduate.

The Buycks have given the race to Scarlet Thread Ministries. On July 26, the first Youth Impact 5k will be run along the route of the Jason Buyck Memorial 5k Run/Walk.

The purpose of this race is to draw attention to the needs of young people in Wayne County and help fund programming for young people in Sodus.

The race will begin and end at the Sodus Third United Methodist Church with a start scheduled for 9 a.m. The first 100 registered runners will be given a free T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded in age and gender brackets for racers as young as 14 to 19, and right on through to racers 70 and older.

There is a $10 entry fee for students and a $15 pre-registration, $20 post-entry fee for adults.

Recreational programs, like the Mill Street Youth Center run by Scarlet Thread Ministries in Sodus, will be supported by this race. The funding will sustain programs that help connect local young people to volunteers and staff that can mentor and support them.
