Each year more than 35,000 who are in need of a marrow or stem cell transplant search the 11 million volunteers that are in the National Marrow Donor Program registry, yet only 3,000 to 4,000 transplants happen each year. Sean Dobbin, is a 1998 graduate of North Rose -Wolcott, who now lives in Wilmington, Delaware, and was diagnosed with acute lymphocyte leukemia February 6 2008. A week later, Van Waes died of the same disease. There is no cost to be tested. Donors must be between 18 and 60 years old and meet health guidelines. Although someone from the patient's family might be the closest match, 70% of patients do not have a matching donor in their family.
