Joe Contario wins coaching awards

Joe ContarioNewark Track Coach Joe Contario received two top coaching awards following his team's undefeated, 7-0 season.

He was named the Section 5, Class A Boys Track Coach of the Year and the Finger Lakes League Track Coach of the Year by the Canandaigua Messenger.

He has been the NHS track coach since 1979. This year, the boys team was undefeated and won four out of five invitational. The season culminated with the team being the Section 5 Class A champions.

Contario, who teaches social studies at NHS, has won Section 5 Coach of the Year awards at least 20 times before. 'It's always nice to win awards, especially in the case of an award selected by your peers,' he said. 'This award really acknowledges the hard work by the athletes and our entire coaching staff. Its really a program award because we cant be successful unless our entire staff does a good job.'

The other varsity assistant coaches are Tim Burlee, who teaches physical education in the Wayne Central district and Tim Lannon, a Canisius College graduate, who is certified to teach physical education.

Contario coached both Burlee and Lannon when they were at NHS.

Modified track boys and girls coaches are Nancy Hood, Newark Middle School physical education teacher and Aaron Harrington, who teaches physics at NHS. During his 29-year career, Contario has coached 34 Section 5 champion teams in cross country and indoor and outdoor track.
