March 20 dance helps Last year, the Newark High School Interact Club raised about $4500 in contributions from friends, staff and community members for the war-torn Darfur region of western Sudan. This year, it hopes to raise money to help the Rotary Organization ShelterBox. The relief organization provides humanitarian aid worldwide in the form of shelter, warmth and comfort to people displaced by natural and other disasters. ShelterBox works directly with local organizations in countries where disasters have occurred, in partnership with other aid agencies and through the international Rotary network. NHS senior Willie Clark, Interact Club president, who is overseeing the fundraiser, explained why the club decided to raise funds for ShelterBox. A benefit dance will be held March 20 from 8 to 11 p.m. in the NHS gymnasium featuring music provided by Intergalactic disc jockey Trenton Barry. Clark is hoping not just the school community, but that Newark community members, businesses, organizations and churches will donate to the cause. Last year's Darfur effort would not have been nearly as successful without the help of the Newark community. Community members wishing to donation can send checks to: the ShelterBox Project, c/o Willie Clark at Newark High School, Peirson Avenue, Newark 14513. 'Since 2001, ShelterBox has helped disaster victims on every continent including for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka; earthquake victims in Pakistan and even to Hurricane Katrina victims. It has sent over 30,000 boxes/tents to over 30 different countries to date, and its outstretched arm, around both our own great country and in worldwide efforts made it just seem right,' Clark said. The Interact Club members want to raise money to pay for ShelterBox 'boxes' that contain tents, sleeping bags, blankets, cooking utensils, water containers, purification tablets and many other necessities for living for ten people.
