Kayla Mayou wins Mary Putnam Grant Kayla Mayou, the 2007 recipient of the Mary Putnam Recruitment Grant, studies Music Education at Roberts Wesleyan College, carrying a 4.0 grade point average. She is the daughter of Brian and Gloria Mayou and a 2007 graduate of Sodus High School, graduating third in her class. At Sodus High, she was involved in many clubs and organizations. Musical activities were a particular focus for Kayla. She was in both the school drama and musical productions each of her four years of high school. She was a member of the Jazz Band and Select Choir. Her senior year, Mayou served as concert accompanist, middle school choir assistant, and middle school musical accompanist. Her other interests included Varsity Tennis during her junior and senior years, Student Council, College Club, Spanish Club and National Honor Society. She was supportive of her church, especially in music positions such as leader of the choir at times, singing, and playing the piano. She also was active in Vacation Bible School programs as group leader and in drama presentations. The Mary Putnam Recruitment Grant is offered through Beta Theta, the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. The Society promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. One thousand dollars is made available to a graduating high school senior interested in a career in education. Applications for this prestigious award will be available in the guidance offices at Red Creek High School, North Rose-Wolcott High School, Lyons High School, Williamson High School, Sodus High School and Clyde-Savannah High School. The Selection Committee chooses a recipient based on an essay he/she submits, high school transcripts, and a letter of recommendation from an adult known to the applicant.
