Roll up sleeves for Community Pride Grab your rake, roll up your sleeves and participate in the Newark Community Pride Day, Saturday, May 10. Volunteers will meet in the Nesbitt & Williams Law Office parking lot, corner East Avenue and Union Street from 9:15 to 10 a.m. Donuts and beverages, donated by Dunkin Donuts, will be served as crews receive their assignments. The event will conclude at 1 p.m. Last year, over 100 volunteers cleaned and raked village streets, canal banks, parks, trails, parking lots. This year promises to be bigger than ever said Newark Village Clerk, Lee Mikewicz, who is heading up the effort. Mikewicz has obtained support from area businesses and groups to support the event. Subway has donated a party sub, Dominos and Nichols Financial will provide pizza. Wegmans is supplying all beverages, and Secor Home & Hardware has come forth with gloves and plastic bags. Cub Scout Troop #122 is participating and Wal-Mart, and Lyons National Bank have pledged a total of 11 workers to help. Kelley School PTA has joined the effort with a $500 donation. Other donations include a $1000 check from Wal-Mart, $250 from Colacino Electric Supply, and $50 from Newark Village Pharmacy. The Northside Neighborhood Alliance will participate in the cleanup. At 1 p.m., workers are asked to gather at T. Spencer Knight Park on the North side of the canal. Food and refreshments will be served until 3 p.m. Live music will be provided by Dan Schmitt and the Shadows.
