Newark concert band, wind ensemble are outstanding Newark High School Concert Band and Wind Ensemble received outstanding ratings at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Major Organizations Festival at Fairport High School. The Wind Ensemble performed level VI music and earned a gold rating with distinction, the highest possible rating. Thirty percent of the members of the Wind Ensemble are new to the group this year. Level VI music is described in the NYSSMA Manual as 'very difficult.' A Gold With Distinction rating is awarded to those organizations that qualify for a Gold Rating, as stated above, while having achieved a standard of performance deemed exceptional in all three selections. 'We worked hard for it and we rocked,' said junior Bob Hauf, a saxophone player. Wind Ensemble clarinetist Liz Bitonti said receiving the highest rating possible was 'a great way to top off our senior year.' Junior percussionist Walter Fedczuk said, 'Mr. Schwind is probably the only director that could have done this.' The NHS Concert Band, that Dave Schwind also directs, performed level IV music and earned a gold rating. About 55 percent of the members of the Concert Band are new to the group this year. Level IV music is described in the NYSSMA Manual as 'moderately difficult: Recommended for advanced junior high school groups and average high school groups.' 'We've faced some struggles and worked hard and got the Gold,' freshmen flutist Emily Middlebrook said. 'This means a lot and shows how far we've gotten from the beginning of the year,' said junior percussionist Ryan Jeffrey. Copyright
