ACS Relay for Life event is May 30 The American Cancer Society has planned an event for communities to celebrate cancer survivors who've triumphed over the disease and fondly remember those who bravely fought and lost their battle. May 30 - neighbors from across the Wayne County area will join more than 4800 communities across America for this overnight walk-a-thon designed to celebrate cancer survivors and remember loved ones who have lost their battles with cancer. Relay participants set up camp, make new friends, catch up with old ones, entertain each other, share experiences and walk to fight cancer. All participants in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life events, held across the country and locally here in Wayne County are changed for the better after experiencing this community event that provides inspiration for all whether a cancer survivor, a caregiver, or just someone who wants to help the cause. The idea is to have fun while raising money to fight cancer, and provide services to cancer patients and their families. The Relay brings together friends, family, businesses, hospitals, schools, and churches - people from all walks of life. Those teams of eight to 12 members then seek sponsorship prior to Relay from friends, relatives, employers, associates and businesses, all with the goal of supporting a cure for cancer! This event is therapy for the mind, spirit and the heart. A highlight is the luminaria service or candlelight vigil held at nightfall to honor cancer survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. The luminaria candles line the Wayne County Fairgrounds and are left burning throughout the night as a reminder to participants of the importance of their involvement in the Relay For Life event and the fight against cancer.
