Ver Straete appointed NPD Officer in Charge
By John Zornow

Gary Ver Straete At a press conference Tuesday, Newark Police Investigator Gary Ver Straete was appointed Officer in Charge of the Newark Police Department for the next 90 days. Tuesday was retiring Police Chief Richard Bogan's last day on the force.

Ver Straete was one of five applicants for the temporary position. Police Commissioner Kurt Werts said the appointment of Ver Straete was a unanimous decision of the village board, which met twice over the holiday weekend to make the appointment.

Ver Straete will continue as Youth Officer, while Investigator Jay Warren will take over as School Resource Officer.

A permanent appointment will be made in March, when the results of the civil service test are known. After the 90-day appointment has expired, the village board will name an Interim Police Chief to serve until the board surveys the civil service results.

Village Board member Chris Avery said the board will be looking to replace from within, but they would consider applicants from outside Newark Police Department.
