Sign up for Food$ense in Sodus, Lyons

The rising costs of everything are causing many people to search for ways to save money. Food$ense is one way you can do just that.

This is a cooperative food buying program that originates from the Food Bank of Central NY, located in Syracuse. Participants pay $15.50 for a unit of food during the FIRST WEEK of the month, and pick up their unit the THIRD THURSDAY of the month. Units can be purchased with cash or Food Stamps.

A typical unit consists of meat, frozen items, staples (such as rice, pasta, cereal), and fresh produce. The same list of food often costs at least twice as much when purchased from local grocery stores. Multiple units can be purchased. Monthly, money-saving SPECIALS, such as bulk meat or cheese products, are also available.

The June food list includes: Cornish Hens, Country Pork Ribs, Polish Sausage, Fresh Potato Salad, Pierogies, frozen and canned fruits/vegetables and two items of produce. The deadline to purchase a unit is June 5.

Wayne County Action Program administers this program locally, with purchase and pick-up sites located in Sodus and Lyons. Other sites include Ontario and Wolcott. Volunteers are always welcomed to help with the monthly distribution of the food, and on-going promotion of the program.

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is actively recruiting adults 55+ to help in the Sodus and Lyons areas.

To learn more, call Maureen Parks at 483.8080. To be an RSVP volunteer, contact Becky at 946.7530. www.waynecap.org
