Reds win Section 5 BB volleyball title

The Newark girls volleyball team captured the Section 5 Class BB championship Tuesday at Webster Thomas, by defeating rival Wayne Central 3-1.

The Newark volleyball coaches are Craig Sutherland, Elyse Monje, Matt May and Aaron Herrington.

Newark won the first set 25-23 but Wayne tied it with a 25-19 win in the second set.

The next two sets belonged to the Lady Reds, who won 27-25 and 29-27.

Kira Lauer was the tournament most valuable player, contributing 23 assists in the match.

Abbie Gilbert had 19 digs, and Hannah Finewood had 13 kills and three aces. Rachel MacBride had five kills and five blocks, Nicole Novak added seven kills.

Gilbert and Novak were named to the All Tournament team.

Newark will advance to play Palmyra Macedon in state qualifier action . (Thursday)

The Reds advanced to the Sectional Class BB finals with a 3-0 win over Aquinas on November 1 at Newark.

Newark and Aquinas split the first two games before Newark took control. Newark won game one 25-19 before Aquinas bounced back to win the second set 25- 22. Newark won 25-18 in the third and fourth sets.

Finewood had 16 kills and three aces; Lauer added 34 assists and two aces; MacBride had eight kills and four blocks.
