464 people in 'Dobbins Geezer Network'

In 2002, on his 66th birthday, Winston Dobbins sent a mailing to 10 friends to share memories of Lyons and get their memories in return.

After that day, Winston Dobbins Old Geezer Network became an informal e-mail sharing of pictures, newspaper articles and memories of life in early Lyons. When Winston became ill and could no longer head the network, in 2006, he asked Allyn Perry and Andi Evangelist to share the position of Head Geezer.

After Winston's death in 2007, Evangelist and Perry continued managing the mailings.

On Winston Dobbins Old Geezer Network, topics vary from week to week. Most recently members have been sharing Italian meatball recipes, listing Lyons businesses that are no longer around, confessing to underage drinking and being groupies of Wilmer Alexander Jr. and the Dukes.

Some members become involved in the e-mail conversation and others just sit back and read what others write. This network is amazing on several levels and has become much more than entertainment.

The Network provides a sense of community, puts people from many ages and backgrounds on a common ground, is a wonderful way to record our local history, gives people a sense of who they are and where they came from and is a wonderful way to learn things about Lyons.

Geezer membership is about 464, from ages 16 to 88. It includes people who still live in Lyons and those who have long since moved away. There is no fee to join. Anyone who is interested in remembering or learning about Lyons history is welcome to join.
