The Newark Police Department reports...

BUCKLE-UP NEW YORK – The Village of Newark Police Department will once again be participating with State and Local Law Enforcement in this years "Buckle- Up New York" holiday campaign to ensure the safety of the motoring public. The campaign is now under way and will run through Sunday, November 30, 2008.

Village residents can expect stationary checkpoints on the primary highways throughout the Village. Newark Police Officers will be enforcing all sections of the Vehicle and Traffic Law with a primary focus on unbelted drivers and passengers. All front seat occupants must be belted with both lap and harness belts. For children under 4 years of age or less than 40 pounds, specially designed and approved safety seats are required. Rear seat passengers less than 16 must be belted with both lap and harness belts with the same laws applying for children under 4 or less than 40 pounds.

According to Interim Police Chief David Christler, the Buckle-Up New York campaign has raised the voluntary compliance rate for safety belt use from 72% in 1998 to 90% today. He states that untold lives and serious head injuries have been spared through the use of safety belts and approved child safety seats. Safety belt enforcement is in the top three for ensuring the safety of our residents with DWI and Speeding being the other two.
