Wal-Mart issued permit for expansion
At the Village Board meeting Tuesday, Nov.18, Newark Code Enforcement Officer Mark Peake revealed that his office had recently issued a building permit for construction of a Wal-Mart Super Center on Route 31 East. The cost of the project was listed as $10 million. Nearly four years ago, Wal-Mart stores, based in Arkansas, announced plans to open five area super-centers, each within a half hour’s drive of each other. The Macedon and Hopewell stores are completed, but the Newark, Seneca Falls and Geneva stores have been stalled. With approval from the Wayne County Planning Board, the Newark Planning and Zoning Boards and now with the building permit issued, Newark’s Wal-Mart Super Store is closer to reality, but according to Peake, not quite as super as previously planned. Peake said that new revised plans have been down-sized and do not include a tire and lube express. DiMarco Construction is the general contractor for the project. Construction may start in January.
