Traveling east on the Erie Canal trail, Ed Talone stopped at the Newark Diner Wednesday for breakfast and to take a photo of the neon 'Let's Eat' sign. Talone, a backpacker with 40,000 miles to his credit, is impressed with the Newark canal trail and facilities, and is traveling light, with just a tent and extra clothing. He stayed overnight near the Widewaters. He had hiked from Buffalo and was still headed east. One problem he has had to deal with is the perception that he is homeless. He was impressed by the many offers of shelter and food along the way. Talone is office manager and trail information specialist and hiking historian for the American Hiking Organization, based in Silver Springs, MD and has written articles for the American Hiker magazine and several trail guide books.
Talone intends to backtrack to Rochester to hike the Genesee Valley Greenway. Copyright
