United Way and Wayne ARC
raised $7500 on
Canal Walk

The United Way of Wayne County and Wayne ARC raised over $7500 at the first Canal Walk. The October 4 event attracted more than 160 walkers to T. Spencer Knight Park.

Monies raised from the event will benefit local United Way service providers and programs to ensure that the needs of the community are met.

'The turnout of supporters was fantastic,' said David Calhoun, Executive Director of Wayne ARC. 'We appreciate the efforts of everyone who worked so hard to make the event a success. The community really stepped up to show their support, and we look forward to doing it again next year.'

Participants walked a 3.1-mile course starting at T. Spencer Knight Park in Newark to Whitbeck Road and back. Walkers arrived as early as 8 a.m. for registration to enjoy breakfast and refreshments, on a chilly morning. Lunch was provided at noon. Several companies throughout the community sponsored the walk including, food vendors and local agencies.

'We had the perfect day for a first time event. It was great to see so many people from local businesses and agencies come together for a cause. The energy and enthusiasm were high among walkers and I think it went really well,' said Mike Calarco of Newark, United Way Board President.

The United Way and Wayne ARC acknowledges Seana Freling and her team for raising $1000 for the walk.

Event planners of the walk would like to continue the tradition and get as many people involved as possible in 2009.
