Teens arrested,
Interim Police Chief David Christler said damages are now estimated to be over $50,000. Arrested Oct. 22 were two teenagers, Timothy Austin, 18, of 406 East Union Street, Newark and a 13-year-old Newark youth, whose name was withheld due to youthful offender status. Austin was charged with two counts of second-degree and third-degree criminal mischief, as well as four counts of fifth-degree conspiracy. Austin was arraigned before Newark Village Justice Daniel Barrett and sent to Wayne County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail/$20,000 bond. The 13 year old was charged with criminal mischief and conspiracy and referred to Wayne County Family Court for further adjudication. When workers at Spinco Metal Products, on VanBuren St. and Mike's Auto and Truck on Lyons St. went to work last Wednesday morning, they found pieces of glass all over their work areas, but nothing was missing. The same was true at Erie Falcon Golf Club and Restaurant, where window frames were destroyed on the 81-year-old clubhouse and windows were broken at the Pro Shop and restaurant. Steve Dzula, owner of Erie Falcon, discovered a broken windshield on a truck, but tools inside the truck were still there. At Lock 28B, a Canal Corporation tugboat received considerable damage, when all of its windows were smashed. A private tugboat moored on the canal near lock 28B was damaged, with no information available as to the estimates of damage. In all instances, no property was reported missing. Chief Christler credited the work of Investigators Jay Warren and Gary VerStraete in assembling the evidence to solve the crime. Officer Dan Weegar helped identify the suspects from security camera photos. Copyright
