This is Red Ribbon Week in Newark schools Students and staff at Newark High School and Newark Middle School are doing all kinds of things like wearing pajamas, funny hats, sunglasses, Halloween costumes and red ribbons ... to make a statement in favor of healthy living and remaining drug free. The Youth to Youth and SADD clubs at both schools tied red ribbons around trees on school grounds after school Monday, to heighten awareness of the celebration that's held annually at schools throughout the nation. Club members from both schools spoke with students at Kelley School Tuesday, about the virtues of making healthy, not destructive choices. They are selling red carnations at both schools this week. At the Middle School, poster and door decorating contests are being held. The Red Ribbon Campaign began as a result of the death of Enrique Kiki Camarena. He had worked his way through college, served in the Marines, became a police officer, and then joined the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). While working as a DEA agent, he was kidnapped and tortured by drug traffickers. His death was a turning point for the relentless war on drugs. In honor of Camarena's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red ribbons. The National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign in 1988. Copyright
