Household hazardous waste collection Saturday

Hazardous chemicals from your home, garage and basement, computer components and other electronics, pharmaceuticals-unused and unwanted medications.

The date is Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 to 1.

Call 1.800.724.3867 for appointment and directions to the recycling site. All Wayne County residents are invited to take part.

A new element is the added collection of unwanted and out-of-date medications. Concerns over the presence of pharmaceutical waste in surface water and in drinking water have been news items recently. Scientists think that the presence of hormones from household waste water and sewage treatment plants may be affecting the development of aquatic animals. The long-term effects are not known.

'We at EPA are pleased that pharmaceutical collection events continue to assist in helping prevent contaminants from entering waterways that feed into the Great Lakes Basin, an irreplaceable national treasure,' stated Michael J. Basile, USEPA Public Affairs Specialist.

Hazardous chemicals from the home, the shop, and the yard are all accepted at the event. Fluorescent bulbs, both compact and tube, are also accepted.

Latex/water-based paint is not included in the collection. It is not considered hazardous. People may dry the paint by mixing it with kitty litter and dispose of it in the regular trash.
