Arcadia woman, charged with animal cruelty,
surrenders horses and dog
By John Zornow, Courier-Gazette staff writer

horse One dog and four horses were surrendered to the Animal Control Officer Thursday afternoon, and their owner was charged with animal cruelty.

Newark-Arcadia Animal Control Officer Bob Howard said one horse was euthanized at the scene, at 1172 Cole Road, off Route 31.

ACO Howard and Wayne County Deputies arrested Anita L. Reed, at her farm residence, issuing her an appearance ticket to be answered in Arcadia Town Court.

Reed was allowed to keep two dogs that were not in physical danger.

Her 10-year-old gelding 'Sailor' was euthanized by members of the Wayne County Animal Cruelty investigators team.

Howard explained that investigators rate the condition of animals on a standardized 1-10 scale, 1 being the poorest condition. 'Sailor' was rated 1, a Bay named 'Makyra' was rated 1.5 condition, and three others - 'Sarah,' 'Quaker' and 'Pippy,' were judged to be in 2.0 to 2.5 conditions. They were transported to Cracker Box Palace at Alasa Farms in Alton.

'I have been there (the Reed residence) a number of times on complaints,' said Howard, adding that Reed 'is not a bad person, but like many cases, she got in over her head.'

Reed cooperated with investigators and voluntarily surrendered the animals. Howard urged citizens to make contributions to Cracker Box Palace, a non-profit animal shelter, where farm animals of every kind come to recover from illness, neglect or abuse.
