Map Club grows LYONS - The second meeting of the newly-formed Map Club was held at the Museum of Wayne County History Wednesday, March 18. Two more people joined the club, bringing membership to 17. The meeting was led by Wayne County Historical Society member Gary Fitzpatrick who discussed online maps. The Library of Congress site, www.loc.gov, was projected on a large screen and Fitzpatrick led the club through the various ways that local maps could be seen, enlarged, and downloaded on to personal computers. 'It was fascinating,' said Museum Executive Director Larry Ann Evans, who was impressed that the maps could be browsed in the utmost detail. Two members, Hugh Miner and Edson Ennis brought in Sanborn Insurance maps one of Clyde and the other of Lyons. The Sanborn Fire Insurance maps were originally created for assessing fire insurance liability in urbanized areas in the United States. The maps included detailed information town and building information in approximately 12,000 U.S. towns and cities from 1867 to 1970. The club's next meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 where discussion will be around what local history can be deduced from viewing the Sanborn Maps. Anyone interested in any aspect of maps is invited to come. For more information, call the Museum of Wayne County History at 946-4943 or visit www.waynehistory.org. Copyright
