'Gunga Din' at Ohmann Theatre

LYONS - The Lyons Main Street Program will be hosting a fourth movie, 'Gunga Din', as part of its 1939 Retrospective Series at 2 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 at the Ohmann Theatre at 65 William St.

The film 'Gunga Din' defines the term classic in all of its aspects: a great script, impressive photography and superlative work by director George Stevens combined with terrific performances by the entire cast, including Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Victor McLaglen and Sam Jaffe as the humble hero. Set in India during the British colonial period, three sergeants are facing not only the threat of a native uprising but the imminent disruption of their brotherhood by that worst of all fates, romance (Joan Fontaine). And, always in the background, loyally doing his best, is the regimental water carrier who aspires to be a bugler, Gunga Din. Based loosely on Rudyard Kipling's famous poem, the film combines drama, action scenes and comedy as only Hollywood at its best could do.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for youngsters under 13. Proceeds to benefit the Lyons Main Street Program, which is located at 70 William St. For more information call, 871-4220 or e-mail lyonsmainstreetprogram@gmail.com
