Montezuma Audubon Center SAVANNAH - The Montezuma Audubon Center, located in Savannah, announces the following April programs:
The Montezuma Audubon Center, Onondaga Audubon Chapter and the Braddock Bay Research Center are offering the opportunity to visit Lake Ontario for the annual spring hawk migration. Tens of thousands of raptors are counted each spring as they migrate northwards. Participants will leave the center at 8 a.m. and head towards Derby Hill or Braddock Bay, depending on wind direction. Interpretation will be provided by members of Onondaga Audubon or Braddock Bay Research Center. The day will be spent observing hawks. Participants will head back to the Center at 2 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Call 365-3588 or e- mail cstokes-cawley@audubon.org. Cost to travel on the center's van is $20/person, which includes early morning coffee, baked goods, binoculars. Bring a lunch. To car pool, meet at the center at 8 a.m. and car pool to the hawk watch destination. Cost is $5, binoculars available by request.
-Saturday, April 11, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. Spring nesting season is here. Join Audubon Center staff for a day all about eggs, nest building and egg dying. Construct a one of a kind nest using materials from nature. After a nest is prepared, dye eggs naturally with a variety of plants and vegetables. Add some speckle of paint to mimic the colorful eggs that can be found in nature. Pre-registration required. Cost is $5 per child, $15 per family.
-Drop in the center any time from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participate in an egg-trek egg hunt. Each egg provides answers to nature trivia. Turn in answers for a treat. Children 6 and younger will need adult assistance. Free.
-Thursday, April 16 from10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. or from 1 to 3 p.m. Join Montezuma Audubon staff to discover seasonal changes in the natural world. Designed for home- schooled children ages 6 to 13, the two-hour programs provide fun, hands-on opportunities to learn about and experience the natural world. In April much of the land surrounding the Montezuma Audubon Center is covered by water. In this lesson, students will journey through the water cycle, discover local watersheds and learn the importance of wetlands to people and wildlife. Pre-registration required. Cost is $7 per child per lesson.
-Saturday, April 18 from 10:30 a.m. to noon or Thursday, April 23 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. This new monthly 90 minute program designed for 4 and 5 year olds incorporates puppetry, imaginative play, cooperative games and outdoor exploration. 'The Salamander Room' by Anne Mazer, illustrated by Steve Johnson provides the springboard for this lesson. Youngsters will pretend to be salamanders, as they slither to safety after a long winter's siesta and will learn about a salamander's life cycle.
