health inspections NEWARK: As a culmination of several months of learning what people from other countries went through to immigrate to the United States, Kelley School fifth-graders participated in the annual Ellis Island Day Wednesday, April 8. To better understand what it was like for the more than 12 million immigrants who passed through the gateway to America from 1892 to 1954, the students dressed in costume to become 'immigrants' and simulated the experiences of living in the steerage of a ship and going through processing at Ellis Island. The study unit will culminate with an upcoming trip to the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, where students will see 'Birth of an Industrialized Nation.'

Students learned that immigrants coming into Ellis Island underwent health inspections.
