Newark CROP Hunger Walk set for May 2 NEWARK - The Mabel Hommer Memorial Newark Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty Hunger Walk will be held May 2. The walk has been organized locally and organizers have set a goal of 70 walkers and $7,500 raised to help stop hunger in the community and around the world through self-help initiatives. Last year, 64 walkers raised more than $7,200. A portion of the funds will support hunger-fighting work and local agencies. This year, Newark and 2,000 cities and towns nationwide are joining together in interfaith community CROP hunger walks around the theme of 'we walk because they walk.' Many of the walkers will wear shirts with the phrase. Central America is one part of the world where CROP walk funds are given. In Guatemala, indigenous families - especially women - are learning how to grow more and better foods for their families using appropriate technology, such as greenhouses and catchment irrigation, alongside creative solutions of their own designs, including using tires as mini-garden planters. They are also learning how to organize themselves, gain social and economic empowerment and market their extra harvests. CROP walks also contribute to rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast.
