May Day Celebration at Peacework Farm

NEWARK - A May Day celebration will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at Peacework Farm at 2231 Welcher Road. Local fiddler Kit Fallon will accompany the dancing around the May pole. No previous dance experience is necessary. The group will then take a wildflower walk in the woods of the Kraai Preserve, a nature preserve open to the public, and tour the old Humbert dairy farm, now owned by the Genesee Land Trust and leased to Peacework Farm. At 4:30 p.m., there will be a potluck supper. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass, place settings and folding chairs. The farm will provide drinks. All are welcome.

Those interested in joining in community supported agriculture are asked to attend the local orientation meeting and sign-up meeting at 1 p.m., before the celebration. The Peacework farmers grow over 200 varieties of 70 crops to supply weekly packets for close to 300 families in Wayne and Ontario counties and the greater Rochester area.

New members are welcome to join Peacework's community supported agriculture cooperative. Every week of the 26-week season, members receive a packet of fresh produce: from seven to 10 vegetables in a full share, and four to five in a partial share. Pick-up is at the farm.

The price is $14 to $25 a week for full shares on a sliding scale, and $11 a week for partial shares. Scholarships for as much as $8 per week are available. Members agree to share the risks and benefits of the season with the farmers and to work three four-hour shifts during the season helping with the farm work. Peacework welcomes families with children and offers special children's days when Roland Micklem, a Wayne County naturalist, leads children on nature walks.
