Lyons Methodists roll up their sleeves

LYONS: Lyons United Methodist Church is full of life! In July 2008, Pastor Ellen Knight became the new minister for this landmark church, which has been a focal point in Lyons for many years. You may often use the church with the big clock as a landmark when giving directions. Now you can associate the church with the big new clock as a building with a place of many happenings.

We have a traditional worship service every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. with communion served the first Sunday of each month for everyone who believes in Jesus Christ. Our church services occasionally include our ever-growing, amazing praise band. This group introduces new upbeat tunes to the congregation.

Sunday school for elementary children is held during the worship service. We are prepared each week to teach, whoever may come, about the love of Jesus. An adult Sunday school class is held at 10:15 each week after worship service. The group recently finished reading and discussing The Shepherd's Prayer, which was a fictional story on the shepherds' outlook of Jesus' birth. It gave many a new respect for the Christmas season. There are also plans being made to begin a Bible study.

In preparation of the Christmas 2008 season, we held a Music Camp on Friday afternoons for five weeks. There was an average of 25 children from first through sixth grade who came to learn about the real reason for the season. Each week they came directly from school, had a snack and then divided into three groups and rotated between three different stations. They did a craft, heard a story and learned Christmas songs. Just before Christmas, the group gave two public musical performances. Their first was at the Ohmann Theater on December 7 during the Lyons Tree Lighting ceremony and the second was during our worship service on December 14. Another Music Camp is planned for the upcoming Easter/Lent season. Watch for more information to come.

Many dinners are also planned for the coming year. Our first will be on February 14: a Pasta Buffet Valentine's Dinner. May will bring our annual Mother-Daughter Banquet, which gets bigger every year. In June, we have our Father-Son Banquet and the ever-famous Strawberry Social. These four events are just the beginning. Watch for more to come.

The last Saturday of each month, you can come and join us for Dinner and a Movie. Everyone brings a dish-to-pass and after a wonderful time of good food and great fellowship, we settle in and watch a movie. Children are welcome to come as childcare is provided with their own movie to watch and activities.

Our Methodist Church also hosts the Retired Senior Citizens program twice a month and this is no small group. This gathering for lunch and a program gives many retirees the opportunity to get out for a fulfilling meal, fellowship with many friends, both old and new, and a chance to learn about something new. It begins at 11:00 a.m. Please feel free to join them.

So, you see, the Lyons United Methodist Church may have just been a landmark for giving directions, but if you look inside, you'll find a lot happening. Please come and join us. We would love to see you!
