Tips to reduce home energy use

NEWARK - Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wayne County offers opportunities to learn more about low-cost or no-cost ways to save money on energy bills. Inefficient appliances waste energy and money. After home and water heating, appliances are the next largest energy incurred.

Use small electric pans or toaster ovens for small meals, rather than heating a large stove or oven. Match the size of the pan to the heating element. A toaster oven uses a third to half as much energy as a full-sized oven.

Use pressure cookers and microwave ovens. They save energy by significantly reducing cooking time. Dont keep a refrigerator or freezer too cold. Recommended temperatures are 37-40 degrees for the fresh food compartment and 5 degrees for the freezer.

During February, scheduled workshops are:

  • Save energy, save dollars, 9 to 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 5 or Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wayne County at Route 88 North in Newark.
