Curling sweeps back into Palmyra

PALMYRA: Curling sweeps back into the Port of Palmyra Marina from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22. The Village of Palmyra and friends of the Rochester Curling Club invite everyone to give this ancient Scottish game a try. The afternoon will include a demonstration game and instruction for beginners.

Last year, nearly 400 people attended the event.

'It's been wonderful to see so many people come out and curl right here in the heart of Palmyra,' Palmyra curler Bill Unterborn. 'We hope everybody whos tried it comes back out and brings a friend or five.'

Curlers and spectators can warm up at Muddy Waters Cafe with hot beverages, soups, chili and sandwiches, while overlooking the winter fun.

Curling is a winter sport in which opposing teams take turns delivering a 42-pound polished granite stone down a 144-foot long sheet like shuffleboard on ice.

The friends of the Rochester Curling Club will be on hand to offer an introduction to their favorite winter sport. Stones will be provided. Bring boots or sneakers to wear on the ice: no ice-skates. Children and those who might be less sure of their footing on ice may wish to wear a bicycle helmet.

This event will take place, weather permitting. The marina must be ice covered. For more information, visit www.rochestercurling.com.
