Students save lives one penny at a time NEWARK: Students at Perkins Elementary School are participating in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients program. For the month of February, students are collecting pennies, coins and currency to raise money to support the research of leukemia, lymphoma and blood cancers. Last year, students in 115 local schools collected approximately $90,000 for Pennies for Patients. Funds raised from Pennies for Patients will help support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's programs of blood cancer research and local patient aid and services. The Western New York & Finger Lakes Chapter currently funds nine research projects at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the University of Rochester. The local chapter also has approximately 2,200 patients on its roster. Each patient is eligible to receive up to $500 per year in direct financial reimbursement to help with costs not covered by insurance, as well as benefit from other programs and services.
