Barrett seeks county judgeship
Barrett graduated from Williamson High School in 1971, Le Moyne College in 1975 and Albany Law School in 1978. He has practiced law in Newark since that time, along with his father, J. Willis Barrett, and his brother, Josh Barrett. Barrett has practiced law for 30 years and has practiced in all courts, including Wayne County Court, family court and surrogates, New York State Supreme Court and town and village court. He has also argued cases in the Appellate Division and the New York State Court of Appeals. Barrett was previously an assistant district attorney for nine years, specializing in prosecution of driving while intoxicated cases. He has previously been acting Newark justice for six years, and now has been village justice for four years and the Arcadia Town Judge for two years. He also previously served on the Newark Municipal Board for seven years, and has served as counsel to Sen. Paul Kehoe and law guardian in the Wayne County Family Court for eight years. Barrett has served on the Arcadia Republican Committees as a committee person, as well as counsel. For the past two, he has been one of the five town and village justices in New York state chosen to be on the New York State Bar Association Task Force on the Reorganization of Town and Village Courts. Barrett participated in making recommendations to the Chief Judge Judith Kaye of the New York State Court of Appeals as to how best to support and maintain the town and village Courts. Barrett has also been active in the community. He previously was a basketball coach at St. Michael School for 12 years and a soccer and baseball coach at Alex Eligh Community Center for more than six years. He has been an active member of St. Michael Church. He currently serves on its finance committee, which he has been on for the past 24 years, and has been a lector for the past 20 years. In addition, he serves on the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital Foundation Board and has been on the executive committee for nine years. He is also a pro bono counsel for the Candy Apple Daycare Center.
Barrett is a lifelong resident of Wayne County. He has been married to his wife, Cynthia, for 21 years, and has three children, Emily, John and Thomas. Copyright
