Comprehensive plan steering committee
discusses land use planning

by JIM HOFFMAN
Williamson Supervisor

The fourth meeting of the Williamson comprehensive plan steering committee took place in the library conference room Jan. 21. Attendees included Bert Peters, Eric Herriman, Jay Peters, Maria Ehresman, Mark Lagoner, Tom Watson, Tom DeMarree, Mike Bixby, Ed Merriett, Peter Shumski and me. Topic of the meeting was land use planning.

Categories of land use include agriculture, residential, vacant, industrial, commercial, recreation and entertainment, community services and public services. We broke into two groups to develop a proposed future land use plan for Williamson, which will be presented for public input and refined at the public land use workshop at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5 at the middle school cafeteria in Williamson.

"Central to land use planning is the preservation of agricultural land and open space, yet we also need to plan for commercial and industrial growth, as one way to increase the tax base. Future land use planning is a tool that allows us to identify an appropriate balance."

"I think the March 5 meeting is very important to the future of our town. I would encourage anyone who can attend to do so. The meeting is pivotal to ensuring the new comprehensive plan is truly a community-wide vision for our future."

The water department outdoor crew will be replacing water mains on Railroad Avenue this summer. Most of the mains are part of the original system installed in the 1920's. These water mains are undersized by today's standards and provide insufficient flows for present and future industrial usage. The replacement mains will increase fire flows for fire fighting purposes.

"A good percentage of the cost of water main replacements is in the materials - more specifically the cost of pipe. PVC pipe prices are tied to the cost of oil."

"Typically, materials are purchased in the spring, close to the time when they will be used. Recently, the price of oil has fallen and the Town Board took advantage of this decrease to purchase materials for this years water project. At the Jan. 27 Town Board meeting, the Board awarded four bids for a total cost of $91,285."

"This represents savings of approximately $24,350 over the cost of the same materials, if purchased last June. While the town will need to store the materials, a considerable amount of money was saved. Pipe prices are currently the same as in 2003."

"I attended the Webster-Fairport B.P.O. Elks Club annual Police, Fire and Ambulance Corps recognition dinner Feb. 5 in Fairport, which was attended by more than 300 people. Two Williamson residents were recognized for their community service, Mary Skerrett of the Williamson Volunteer Ambulance Service and Adam Rogers of the Williamson Fire Department. Congratulations go to the well deserving award winners."

I attended Cub Scout Pack No. 521's 2009 Blue & Gold Banquet Feb. 7 at the Williamson United Methodist Church. Officiating at this years event were committee chair Deb DeRue, Cubmaster Dave Hopper and assistant Cubmaster Mike Kuhl.

Crossing over to Boy Scouts this year are Jacob Bailey, Logan DeRue, Jordan Hayes, Roy J. Hopper and Austin Whitcomb.

The food was delicious and many other Cubs Scouts and parents were recognized as well. In attendance for the happy event was Mr. Lyman Howe, who I believe may be Williamson's most senior Eagle Scout. Howe became an Eagle Scout in 1938.

"I also attended the Humane Society of Wayne County's annual auction Feb. 7 at the Quality Inn in Newark. Presiding over the event was Executive Director of the Humane Society Mark Plyter and President of the Board of Directors, Stephanie Cooper, both Williamson residents."

The next AARP driving course is held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, March 27 and again Saturday, March 28 at the American Legion in Williamson. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. For more information or to register, call Linda Yancy at 594-2248.
