Four Chaplains service Feb. 1

PALMYRA: Area residents are invited to the Wayne County American Legions 14th Annual Four Immortal Chaplains memorial service at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1 at the Western Presbyterian Church in Palmyra.

The service is a tribute to the four courageous chaplains and the 672 soldiers, who lost their lives at sea Feb. 3, 1943, when the United States troop ship USAT Dorchester was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Greenland.

The four chaplains were honored posthumously in 1961, when Congress created a special Congressional Medal of Valor in their memory.
