NEWARK — A 12-year-old girl was hospitalized Wednesday night after she was struck by a vehicle — which then allegedly left the scene — at the corner of West Avenue and West Maple Avenue, Newark Police said.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., a witness told police said they saw the girl, whose name was not available as of press time, being thrown several feet by a white or light colored car, perhaps a Buick Rendezvous, which went "speeding away".

Newark Police Chief David Christler, at the scene that night, said the girl was found lying by the side of the street at the intersection. The impact from the collision, he added, was strong enough to lob the girl’s shoes off her feet.

The youth was taken to by ambulance to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, where she is being treated for a back injury.

The search for the driver of the vehicle, meanwhile, continues.

Christler said officers are investigating Department of Motor Vehicle records to find a match to the alleged hit-and-run vehicle.

"I encourage area residents to be on the lookout for the vehicle described or a similar vehicle that may have minor damage to the front end," he said.

Police are asking anyone with any information to call 331-3701 or 911.
